Sporting Clube de Goa back in I-League

Sporting Clube de Goa beat Royal Wahingdoh 2-0 on the final match day at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong to book a berth in next season’s I-League. Going into the match, the Flaming Orange were placed third on the table and needed a victory to guarantee their promotion.
The Goan side were focused on their task right from the kick-off and had an unenviable lead after the first 15 minutes. Skipper Samananda Singh put them ahead in the 12th minute and three minutes later, it was Eldon Maquemba’s opportunity to score from the spot which he gladly did.
Sporting finished with 14 points, two less than that of Shillong Lajong who have also made it into the I-League 2011-12 season.
Meanwhile in another match, Vasco SC did what was required of them beating United Sikkim 3-1 at Polo Satadium but finished a point behind Sporting at third spot.
It was Joy Ferrao who scored the opening goal in the very second minute of the match and thereby the lead was doubled within minutes as Koko Sakhibo found the back of the net.
John Menyongar of United Sikkim converted the penalty awarded to them around the half hour mark to bring the north eastern side back into the game. However Vasco’s resistance was far too much in the end for Stanley Rosario’s side as they rubbed salt into United Sikkim’s wounds with an injury time goal by Koko to make it 3-1.
