Dempo beat Air-India in 14-0

MARGAO: Defending champions Dempo Sports Club created history in the Indian Football scenario on Monday when they thrashed Air-India 14-0 in the I-league football match played at Nehru Staduim, here and assured themselves of a second spot in this prestigious tournament.  Dempo were leading 4-0 at the breather, though they could have scored at least four more goals in this half itself.
In the second session, Dempo added 10 more goals in their favour, leaving Air-India high and dry and completely stranded.
Ranti Martins scored a brilliant double hat-trick today (35th,42nd, 61st, 67th, 79th, 86th) and the Brazilian import, Beto who had a say in most of the goals that came in favour of Dempo scored four goals including a hat-trick (49th, 54th , 68th,89th).The other goal-scorers were: Peter Carvalho, who scored a brace (41st and 60th minute), Climax Lawrence (44th minute) and young Clifton Gonsalves (88th minute).
Ranti Martins incidentally so far takes the credit of being the highest scorer of this tournament with his individual goal-tally going up to 27 goals so far.
Speaking about the big win today, Dempo’s chief coach Armando Colaco said: "It is indeed true that Dempo has created history in the Indian football by scoring 14 goals to nil in a single match and I wished that his team could have done it to give the title to the Dempo House."
The team manager, Mr Custodio Almeida said that all credit goes to the boys who played like real champions today.
That Dempo meant business was known right from the 10th minute itself when they came in strongly to literally dance in the rival territory with the ball time and again. After a couple of misses - to be precise six in number- until the 34th minute, during which time two of the tries - one of Beto and the other of Godwin Franco hit the post.
The floodgates for this huge score never heard so far anywhere it seems in the world, began in the 35h minute of play. Beto worked down the middle and sent the ball to a better-placed Ranti Martins, whose left footer gave no chance whatsoever to Air-India keeper Souvik Mondal.  Then Clifford Miranda sent a cross to Peter Carvalho whose left footer blasted into the rival nets.
It was again Miranda from the left who was in the thick of action again passing the ball to Ranti on the right flank and the Nigerian forward made no mistake to oblige Clifford for the good pass.  Two minutes before the break, Beto worked on the right flank and gave a superb pass to Climax Lawrence who blasted the ball in.
Dempo played like the champions team throughout never giving any chance for Air-India to raise their head anywhere into the game. Dempo were all over the rival territory in both the sessions of play and had all their tries entered the nets, the score line could have been nearly reaching 20 goals if not more. Such was the script that Dempo wrote today but all their efforts to retain the championship were dashed to the ground with the victory of Salgaocar Sports Club against JCT in Ludhiana today. However, Dempo have now assured themselves to at least finish as runners-up in this tournament. Then it was the turn of Climax Lawrence to feed Beto who scored in style to make it 5-0 in favour of Dempo at the stroke of 49th minute of play.
Beto soon scored again to make it 6-0 off a Climax Lawrence pass. Peter Carvalho then completed his brace in the 60th minute off a Beto pass to make it 7-0 in favour of his team.
Goals never failed to come on and then in the 61st minute Ranti Martins scored his hat-trick for the day of a long ball .Ranti again scored in the 67th minute to make it 9-0 in favour of this great team of Dempo SC and then in the 68th minute Beto scored to take the score to 10-0.Ranti then made it 11-0 taking a good shot from outside the box off a pass by Climax and then it was 12-0 in the 86th minute when Ranti scored his double hat-trick of the day.
Clifton Gonsalves made it 13-0 at the stroke of 88th and then Beto made it 14-0 to completely ground Air-India today with relegation staring glaringly at the face of this Mumbai team.
