NIZ GOENKAR FOOTBALL TEAM CREATES WAVES IN OMAN

Friday the 25th was an exciting day for Indians and especially Goan football enthusiasts in Oman with 8 teams vying to battle it out for glory. The turnout for the One Day 11-A-Side Football tournament was a good one and the competition stiff with a series of thrills and spills at the Qurum football ground.

Salgaocar take on ONGC today

Dempo to play ‘home’ ties at Pune

PANJIM: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has made it compulsory that clubs playing even in their group stages of AFC Cup should host matches under floodlights this season.  With India’s champion club Dempo Sports Club now set to play their opening game of the AFC Cup 2011 on March 1 against Yemen’s Al Tilal, they have no option but to look elsewhere as their home venue in Goa – Nehru stadium, Fatorda – is devoid of proper arrangements for floodlights to host an international football match, in the present case the AFC Cup.

STEFFI AND TALASHA WIN BRONZE

PANJIM: Steffi Cardoso won the bronze in shot put at the National Games in Ranchi on Thursday. Goa bagged yet another bronze with Talasha Prabhu being the medal winner in 50m butterfly stroke. The toal number of medals won by Goa has gone to 10 in all.

CACULO CHARGERS EDGE OUT FOMENTO FLAMINGOS IN BADMINTON

PANJIM: Caculo Chargers emerged champions of the Pro Badminton League Team Championship event, organised by Panjim Badminton Club in association with the Sports Authority of Goa.  In the finals held at Indoor Stadium, Campal-Panjim, the Chargers edged out hot favourites Fomento Flamingos 3-2 in a pulsating and nail-biting encounter.

SALGAOCAR SPORTS CLUB AND AIR INDIA STAY DRAW 1-1

KOLHAPUR: In an entertaining round 13 encounter, Air India and Salgaocar Sports Club dished out a 1-1 draw played at Sahu Maharaj grounds at Kolhapur on Thursday.  In an action-packed first half, both the teams got equal opportunities to score but failed to get the finishing act right. In the 20th minute of the match, Air India midfielder Sukhvinder Singh took a shot which just missed the post by a whisker.

KANNUR: Viva Kerala’s misery in the I-League 2010-11 continued as the home team was beaten 2-0 by the reigning league champions Dempo SC in a round 13 match at Jawahar Municipal Stadium, here on Thursday.
