PANJIM: Ponda Footballers defeated Rising Star of Madkai 7-6 via the tie-breaker and enter the semi-finals of Madkai Panchayat Cup football, played at Madkai Panchayat grounds. At end of regular time, the scores were tied at 1-1.
Ponda Footballers dominated the match and in the first ten minutes they could have been up by three goals. Bobby got the ball inside the danger zone and his try missed the crossbar by a whisker. Then, Pasha got a true ball on top of the danger zone but his weak try was easily collected by the keeper.
Then Minguel, who dribbled two defenders, shot at Naresh instead of directing the ball goalwards. Then it was the opportunity of Madkai when Vishwas got the ball inside the Ponda half and released the ball to Oudumber, whose try hit the goalpost.
In the second half, Ponda dominated but their forwards seemed to have left their shooting shoes at home.
Madkai who got the only opportunity managed to convert it into a goal. Victor got the ball on the flanks and dodged a defender and released a well measured pass to Newton who shot into the goal giving no opportunity to Marvil under Ponda goal.
Down by a goal, Ponda got their main defender Simon to move up as he released a through ball to Naresh at top of the box. Naresh placed the ball to the left of the keeper to draw level. Then Cyril’s header kissed the post and rebounded to Pasha, who ballooned over.
In tie-breaker, Ponda converted off Cyril, Simon, Naresh, Franky, Minguel and Keni while Pasha’s shot hit the crossbar. For Madkai, Oudumber, Sanju, Damu, Babush and Avil scored while Orlando and Domnic muffed their respective chances.
