INFANT JESUS HIGH SCHOOL COLVA BEATS MAHINDRA YOUTH 2-0

VASCO: Infant Jesus High School, Colva emerged Goa Champs after defeating Assagao Union High School, Assagao 2-0 in the finals of Mahindra Youth Football Challenge (MYFC) Under-14 Schools Football Tournament-cum-Talent Hunt organised by Goa Football Association at Tilak Maidan, Vasco, on Saturday.
Dominating the initial proceedings, Infant Jesus could have taken an early lead in the 3rd minute of play but a Sneeden Rodrigues shot hit the cross bar and went out of play. Assagao Keeper Aditya Kadam too came to his side’s rescue saving a shot from Joseph Maria and Sneeden Rodrigues. Infant Jesus finally broke the dead-lock in the 20th minute of play through Jezmon Barretto. Goaded by success, Infant Jesus doubled the lead through Sneeden Rodrigues in the 22nd minute of play.
Changing over, Assagao tried to bounce back into the game with sporadic raids but were unable to beat the last line of defence. Infant Jesus could have added another goal but Assagao keeper once again came to his side’s rescue saving a shot from Sneeden.
Infant Jesus High School, Colva thus laid their hands on the Mahindra Youth Football Challenge (MYFC) Cup and a cash prize of `30,000 while runners up Assagao Union High School, Assagao had to be content with a cash prize of `20,000. Auxilium High School, Caranzalem claimed the third place and cash prize of `10,000.
With this win, Infant Jesus booked their ticket to Bangalore preliminaries of the competition among the top ranked schools of the country.
Brian Rodrigues and Dylan Lourenco of Infant Jesus High School won the star player of the finals and best player of the tournament awards respectively. Dylan Lourenco scored four goals.
The other players to win the awards in the quarter-final stages were Rohan Shaikh (Auxilium), Aditya Kadam (Assagao), Savio Gama (Regina Mundi), Devendra Murgaonkar (Auxilium), Dylan Lourenco (Infant Jesus), Klinff Mendes (Loyola) and Prajat Mandal (Auxilium).
The chief guest for the finals, Mr Fortunate Franco, guest of honour Mr Bramahnand Sankhwalkar, GFA office bearers including vice president Mr Lavino Rebello, Mr Schubert Furtado, Mr Lawrence Gomes, Mr Socrates Carvalho, Mariano Dias and others gave away the prizes to the winners.
Mr Fortunate Franco congratulated the winning team and the Mahindras and Procam for giving an opportunity to the youngsters to showcase their talent and hoped that their progress will lead to India’s success in the footballing field.
Earlier, in the third-place deciding encounter Auxilium High School, Caranzalem got better of Loyola High School, Margao 2-1. Karan Shirodker and Prajat Mandal scored for Auxilium while Dilinger Carvalho netted for losers.
