Sporting squeeze past Goa Velha

After an exciting 90 minutes, Sporting Clube de Goa edged past 10-man Goa Velha Sports Club 2-1 in GFA’s Taca Goa U-20 First Division, at Duler stadium here, Wednesday. The match was goalless at the breather.  Goa Velha’s Joseph Rodrigues was sent off in the 71st minute, which allowed Sporting Clube to take advantage and score two goals in quick succession. Somshekar Kumbar netted a consolation goal from the penalty spot four minutes from time for Goa Velha.
Sporting’s Visnhu Singh, Pedro Gonsalves and Stephen Barretto were continuously swapped around in the forward line throughout, with one always dropping onto the wing, which finally paid off for Sporting.
There were flashes of brilliance from striker Joalan Fernandes and midfielder Alber Gonsalves, but for the most part Goa Velha failed to finish off their chances in front of the goal.  In the opening exchanges, the Sporting goalkeeper did well to deny Alber’s volley.  In the 17th minute Sporting had their best chance to score but efforts from Liandala Sena and Rudy Godinho were blocked by the rival keeper.  In the 27th minute, Joalan dribbled down the left wing before crossing for Alber who narrowly missed the goal with a slick back heel.
The match may have lacked a goal but the craving only intensified when the game resumed, with both teams coming close.  With 19 minutes to go, Joseph was sent off for an off the ball incident which the referee’s assistant brought to the attention of the referee.
Moments later, Vishnu Singh tapped home a corner for Sporting from close range. Sporting’s second goal in the 79th minute took a lucky deflection off Goa Velha’s Alber Gonsalves before entering the net after a corner was swung in by Liandala Sena.
In the 86th minute, Melvin Colaco brought down Cliff Fernandes in the box. Somshekar Kumbar placed home the resulting penalty. - Herald
