Betalbatim emerge U-16 champs

Bresources Betalbatim Sporting Club defeated Salgaocar Sports Club 1-0 to emerge champions in GFA’s U-16 State finals at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, Tuesday. The all-important goal came in injury time of the first half when defender Neville Albuquerque headed home off a flag kick taken by Quan Gomes.
Betalbatim enjoyed the lion share of exchanges throughout with their forwards and midfielders working in tandem to put the rival citadel under pressure.
Betalbatim had numerous shots at the rival goal through Vishal Fernandes, Quan Gomes and Leslie D’Costa and nearly broke the deadlock when striker Vishal Fernandes’ rasping drive missed the mark narrowly.
On the other hand, Salgaocar lacked energy upfront and hardly troubled the rival defence. The match-winner came in when Quan Gomes’ flag kick dipped into the rival territory and Neville headed home giving no chance to the rival keeper.
Earlier, Betalbatim suffered a jolt as striker Vishal Fernandes suffered a leg injury and was rushed to Hospicio Hospital, Margao for treatment. He was later discharged after medical treatment.
Trailing 0-1 at the breather, Salgaocar went all out in search of the equaliser but their attempts at the goal were thwarted by rival defenders with neat tackles.
Salgaocar’s striker James Fernandes who had a good outing in the tournament, was well policed by Betalbatim defenders.  Betabatim were richer by Rs 15,000 while Salgaocar had to settle for Rs 10,000 alongwith trophies.
GFA executive members, Schubert Furtado and Anthony Pango gave away the prizes. Betalbatim coach Eban Mesquita was all praise for his team, which showed great character. “Winning the U-14 and U-16 title in the GFA tournament made the village proud. The boys have always shown great character throughout and always carry a fighting spirit.
