Sai Avtaar lift Salgaocar Trophy

Sai Avtaar, Anjuna produced excellent moves in the one-sided final to easily curtail Pilerne Sports Club 4-0 and to lay hands on 20th Late V M Salgaocar Trophy inter-village football tournament organised by Saligao Sporting Club, at Saligao ground, on Saturday. The teams began on a promising note but it was Pilerne who held a slight edge over the rivals, but their forwards failed to convert the chances that came their way.
After failing to score in the initial proceedings, Pilerne conceded a penalty through a handball which was converted by Cristopher D’Souza to give Anjuna a 1-0 lead.
Changing over, Anjuna kept the momentum going and doubled the lead in the 35th minute through Gautam Diukar.  Immediately thereafter, Julius D’Souza made it 3-0 for Anjuna after the rival keeper had failed an attempt by Joao Pinto. Julius made no mistake in placing the ball past the keeper after he had saved a shot from Joao.
After being reduced to 10-man, Pilerne conceded another goal through Shekar Kerkar off a Akshay Dabhokar’s move in the 52nd minute. Anjuna could have made it 5-0 but Pilerne keeper Henson D’Sa affected a smart save from Akshay Dabholkar.
Sai Avtaar bagged a cash prize of Rs 25,000 while Pilerne had to be content with Rs 20,000 besides the trophies.
Following individual prizes were awarded: Best goalkeeper -- Francisco Mascarenhas (Sai Avtaar), best defender -- M Naik (Pilerne), best half -- Gautam Diukar (Sai Avtaar), best forward -- Julius D’Souza (Sai Avtaar), farewell goal -- Shekar Kerkar (Sai Avtaar).
Albert Colaco, ex-AIFF secretary and GFA secretary was the chief guest, who alongwith the GFA executive members gave away the prizes. Genevi D’Costa of Saligao was felicitated by Mr Colaco for bringing laurels for Goa and India in aquatics. Later, Tony Remedious, president of the club proposed the vote of thanks. - Heraldo
