Cavelossim Moves Into Quarter Finals

MARGAO: St Cruz Club of Cavelossim moved into the quarter-finals of St Anthony’s Super Soccer tournament with a 2-1 victory over Ambelim Sports Club at Directorate of Sports grounds, Colva on Sunday.  Although Ambelim played with only ten players as one of their key player did not turn up, they did give a tough fight to the Cavelossim lads.
As a matter of fact, the way Ambelim lads held up their fort so admirably with the scoreboard reading blank in the first half speaks volumes about their brave fight against a well equipped team like Cavelossim.
Ambelim SC could have found the mark in the 10th minute of play of a counter move but then the goalmouth cross from Joseph went abegging after Ubaldo was unable to give the finishing touches from close distance even as Cavelossim goalkeeper Gaudelon Vaz was out of position under the bar.
Cavelossim then increased their tempo and brought at least three dangerous forays in the rival box which were somehow resisted by Ambelim defence to keep their fort intact in the first half.
Cavelossim then brought off a move initiated by Neil D’Cruz who controlled the midfield with accurate pass which was not taken advantage off by the Cavelossim forward line.  Two good tries by Cavelossim strikers consisting of Maxon and Linton could have earned them goals but their tries nearly missed the mark.
In the second session, Neil D’Cruz’s hard efforts paid off when his well taken header beat the rival keeper Benny D’Silva all ends out to give Cavelossim the lead.  Five minutes from this goal, Cavelossim made it 2-0 in their favour when Shaun romped home with a beautiful drive.
Ambelim however did not give up the fight and managed to reduce the margin a few minutes before the final hooter through Patrick Cardozo.  Neil D’Cruz of Cavelossim was declared the man-of-the-match for his fine display.
