Salgaocar Jrs triumph

Salgaocar SC Juniors were crowned ‘India Champions’ when they defeated Mumbai FC 5-4 via the tie-breaker in the finals of NIKE-Manchester United Premier Cup soccer in Pune, Tuesday.  Earlier in the semi-finals, Salgaocar beat Guwahati Town Club 3-0 via the tie-breaker. Aldrich Fernandes saved all the three rival goal attempts.
Mumbai drew first blood when N Roger scored beautifully off a solo run in the 17th minute. Mumbai resorted to rough physical tactics to keep Salgaocar at bay.
Bruised and battered, the gritty Goan boys fought back to bring the equaliser just before the final call through striker Myron Borges.
In the tie-breaker, Myron Borges, Aliston Fernandes, Vishal Gaokar, Aldrich Coelho and Jesus de Sousa netted for the Goans.
This tournament saw participation from 20 different teams across the nation. Raj Gomes, general secretary of Salgaocar was upbeat about the win, “We are very happy with today’s win, our investment in the youth development has started to pay off.”
The team was accompanied by Augustine Antao (team coach) and Anthony Noronha (manager).
With this win Salgaocar Juniors have qualified for the Asian championship to be held in Bangkok, Thailand. The team will be arriving on May 25 at KTC bus stand, Margao, at 8.30 a.m.
Kushal Das, general secretary, AIFF was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Sunil Chettri (India striker) and Henry Menezes (WIFA).  Salgaocar received NIKE bags and Manchester United official merchandise, apart from a glittering trophy. -  Heraldo
