MAPUSA: Candolim sports club booked their place into the finals of Laxmi & Subha Memorial trophy, organized by Nerul sports club, with a 4-2 win via tie-breaker over Sangolda Lightning, at Nerul grounds on Friday.
Candolim had the first crack at the goal in the 8th minute, where a strike by Roy Das from close range was superbly collected by Sangolda Lightning’s Washington Pereira. At the other end it was veteran and former National keeper Bharat Morje who proved a hard nut to crack as he brought some breathtaking saves to deny Agnelo Quadros and Govind Bhalekar from scoring. In the penalty shootout to decide the winner, Sameer Naik, Shanker Palyekar, Staley D’Silva and Joelief Simoes shot on target for Candolim, while only Mahindra Homekande and Amar Halankar managed to score for Sangolda Lightning. Llyod Mascarenhas of Sangolda Lightning received the man of the match award.
