Betalbatim lift Cana Benaulim Cup – Heraldo Goa

Margao: Betalbatim Sporting Club beat Sporting Club of Davorlim 1-0 to emerge champions in Cana Benaulim Panchayat Cup soccer organised by Cana Benaulim Sporting Association in the finals at St John Baptist ground, Benaulim, Sunday. There was no score at half time.
The all-important goal was netted by striker Allwick Fernandes in the second half.  Davorlim made it clear from the start that they were not going to allow Betalbatim dictate terms, holding their own in midfield while reaming solid at the back.  Davorlim medios worked in tandem to create openings for their forwards who were constantly on the prowl.
Davorlim who enjoyed the lion share of exchanges had a chance to break the deadlock in the 5th minute when striker Andrew Colaco’s rasping drive was beautifully thwarted by Betalbatim keeper Francis Baretto.
On the other hand, Betalbatim’s attack was in disarray with their strikers unable to break the strong Davorlim rearguard.
After resumption, midfielder Denzil Falacao outwitted a couple of defenders and found striker Allwick Fernandes in the right position to beat Davorlim keeper Orkay Figuereido hands down to the loud cheers of Betalbatim’s supporters.
Betalbatim were richer by Rs 30,000 while Davorlim had to settle for Rs 20,000 alongwith trophies.
Following individual prizes were awarded: Best disciplined team Chicalim Youth Club. Best player of the tournament Peter Pereira (Maina). Best half of the finals Vincent Colaco (Davorlim). Best defender of the finals Bonnie Niasso (Davorlim). First scorer of the finals Allwick Fernandes (Betalbatim). Best goalkeeper of the finals Francisco Baretto (Betalbatim). Upcoming player Vincy Fernandes (Cana Benaulim). Man-of-the-finals Joe boy Fernandes (Betalbatim).
Miccky Pacheco, MLA was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of guests of honour Caitano alias Caitu D’Silva, Dr Hubert Gomes and Byron Rodrigues.  Antonio Moraes, writer and director of khell tiatr and Blake da Silva, State 4th ranker at this year’s Goa SSC board exams were felicitated by Mickky.
Later, in his speech, Pacheco came down heavily on SAG for allotting the Holy Trinity ground, Benaulim to Churchill Brothers. He termed the lease as illegal and a fraud. He vowed to fight and not allow the SAG to hand over the ground to Churchill Brothers. Earlier, Carmilina Fernandes, sarpanch, Benaulim welcomed. Later, Agnelo Fernandes, president, Cana Benaulim Association proposed the vote of thanks. In all 12 teams participated. - By W.A.
